Summary

After two days pass and the road from Zircon is cleared, our heroes find themselves on the Old Road to Torunn. It’s barren. Old. Remnants of an old civilization torn down are everywhere. The ceilings are a few hundred feet up. Ornate designs are cracked but still give off dim, magical light. Was this protection? Was is a mix of art and magic? No one can be sure. The specifics were lost with the Torunn clan. The road is fluorescent blue. It gives off enough light to walk with.

Remnant has vague memories about this. Things he recognizes, but it’s like Deja vu. This was once a major trading route under the mountains. This was once a small merchant market. This was once… he doesn’t know. It was once great, but here it lies; dead, broken, uninhabited and forgotten.

After a while of walking, they come across a river with a bridge that has crumbled. They see a fire and a single person next to it talking to… a goat? They approach, carefully.

A cheerful Gnome springs up and introduces himself as Lemony Thaddeus Mason aka Lem. He's a squat fellow sporting a badge for the Ramblers Trailhead and Forestry Association, an old group who keep the lands of Torunn clean and healthy. After some light introductions, their conversation is cut short by a Spined Devil and a pair of Gargoyles. This is Underdark worthy.

A fight breaks out and they beat the baddies. The group heals up and continues their introductions. After some time, they agree to travel ahead with the promise to deliver Lem back to the surface. The endgoal for the group is to get to Torunn and figure out the origins of the darkness they saw in Bulf and to stop the end of the world.

With some clever manuvering on the part of Verity, and the help of Hadarri's "smart rope," they cross the broken bridge, avoiding the river. Lem suggests that perhaps climbing over the mountains would be a better bet for them--in order to avoid any dark baddies in the future--but the group is set on travelling the Dark Road and they press on. Moving from one cavernous room to another, they come across a more desolate area than before. An old fountain and marketplace to their left, and housing to the right.

Lem detects a recent fire and the group finds its source: next to an old well. Luana drops some fire into the well, rousing some bats, and after a moment they are set upon by a bulky dark elf and two young dark elf girls.

The man approaches, speaking directly to Hadarri in elven. The man is confused about their origins. He is confused that anything could exist above ground, let alone back where the group came from. The man explains that he came from Torunn and that is very much inhabited. He implies that his escape was to run from someone... barbaric. He isn't specific. When asked why they are going to Torunn, Hadarri responds, "To find something."

The man responds: "You will not find anything there... just your death."
