These islands were once home to a great and vibrant Dragonborn nation, one that was all but destroyed when the Rending happened. The two islands the Dragonborn inhabited were raised far out of the water, almost as though someone had broken off a piece of the Thonas highlands and dropped them in the middle of the ocean. Before the Rending, this topographical restriction was little concern to the Dragonborn and Dragons that dwelled there. Those that couldn’t fly took great bronze lifts from ocean to island top. They expanded outwards and upwards from the island, building their nation on giant floating disks of earth held aloft by magic alone.

When the Rending came, most of the Dragonborn perished when their city went crashing down to the ocean below as the magic required to keep it airborne no longer existed in the world. From that day, few Dragonborn (and even fewer Dragons) have been seen. Many thought they were extinct, although a few are still out in the world in some of the larger cities, or wandering across the world.

Several expeditions were launched to The Scaled Cliffs after the Rending, but almost none of them returned. There is no natural harbor to shelter ships from the ocean’s harsh and ever-changing weather. The only ship to return from its expedition returned with less than half the people needed to effectively man the ship. It limped back into harbor and the remaining crew babbled on about seeing buildings atop the massively tall islands and a carved stone switchback staircase at the base. The landing party went up the staircase and did not return. After waiting for half a day, some of the crew went after them. The following morning, when there had still been no sign or signal from those that went ashore, the ones left on the boat decided to risk a severely understaffed return trip rather than wait at the mercy of the ocean for the return of a crew that were probably dead.
