Brenthal is a nation of almost entirely coasts. It officially lays claim to the jungle-free land on the Thonas side (eastern side) of the Broken Sea. It works hard to keep the Odrakian jungle from spreading any further into its lands, too. In Brenthal’s infancy, it attempted to expand into the jungle and claim the large swath of wooded lands to the south of it. This turned out to be a disastrous idea. Every single town and village established within the jungle disappeared or was never heard from again. The scouts that did return from the various search parties report that they found abandoned villages or simply nothing at all where the settlers were supposed to set up camp. After several of these failed expeditions, Brenthal declared that it would not be expanding its territory into the jungle.

However, Brenthal does encourage (and often train) adventurers specifically for surviving and exploring the vast jungles that border their land. These jungles were host to several of the most prolific pre-Rend civilizations, including the Troll empire. Brenthal invests heavily in these adventurers and buys the items the come back with (and don’t want to keep for themselves) so they can resell them to the other nations. These magic items and relics of the past are one of their primary exports.

Brenthal is very likely the strongest naval power in the world. So much of people’s day to day life involves boats that most all of its citizens know how to sail to some level of proficiency. They have a thriving fishing market and the best captains around all come from Brenthal.

Brenthal competes with Tha’velen for control of the trading business that crosses the Broken Sea. Each nation levies taxes on the other in what amounts to an economic cold war as each tries to get the upper hand on the other. Thus far, it’s been somewhat of a stalemate. What Tha’velen lack in naval proficiency, it makes up for with ground trade (as it is the major trade hub for Aveth). Brenthal has no easy way to direct ground-based trade to its borders, so it struggles a bit in that regard.

Instead, they’ve negotiated an agreement with Daragoul to set up a satellite port within its borders, at the very top of the Sunder Spine mountains. But even that port’s success depends on the current state of peace/war of the three nations next to Daragoul.
