Quanris
Quanris is a more of a two city-state. The Gnomes of old never bothered to expand beyond the triple peaks of the Quanris mountains other than to build a city at the mouth of a river that flowed from the mountain city to the ocean to better facilitate trade and fishing. The three mountains that spring up to form a strange box valley/canyon in the middle of them have been almost entirely hollowed out and filled to the brim with Gnomes and Gnomish inventions. It bears some similarities to a hive of insects.
Although Quanris’s doors are officially open to all who wish to enter, most of Quanris is Gnome sized. There are many areas that have been retrofitted to allow for the larger races, but even then, it tends to feel a little claustrophobic.
Because the Gnomes hold no land outside of the mountains, the river, and the port city, farming was a real challenge for them. The outside of the mountains (at low enough altitudes) are covered in steep, vertical farms that look similar to rice paddies in their design (although not in what they grow). Most of the food grown are hardy root vegetables. They also have an extensive fungus farm network below ground.
Quanris is the only civilized nation to have an official entrance and connection to the Underdark. Many of the Dwarven cities are thought to be connected to that network of tunnels, but none will admit it because of the imagery that goes along with the Underdark.
