The Coliseum in Birsk is one of eight major gladiatorial coliseums in Ruthgar. It has no name (unlike other Coliseums across Ruthgar).

Every year, a two day coliseum event is held where anyone may enter. The winner of this event will win 50,000gp winnings and the Title Belt.

Coliseum Rules

Any member of the public may enter for this event with a registration fee of 200gp and a drop of blood.

Fighting rules

There is to be no use of magic spells in the Coliseum. Use of an item holding a magic spell (not a magically imbued item) is call for immediate forfeit in the Coliseum, and banning from Birsk for up to one year.

Magic items (ie. Silver, Flame, etc.), armor, and pendants are permitted in the Coliseum fights provided they do not cast spells outwardly.

Fighters can lose a fight in one of two ways:

  1. A fighter yields by dropping their weapon and speaking the words "I yield."
  2. Death

Day One

The first day of the event is a "qualifier" (free attendance to the public). On this day, matches are held concurrently with tracking done by multiple coliseum mathematicians. Three to five fights will be held concurrently until there are exactly thirty-two fighters remaining[1]. Bets for this day are rarely held as odds are not normally favorable.

Day Two

Two, randomly assigned, brackets of 16 fighters will fight off against each other until there are only two fighters left.

Fights are done in bouts of three, with breaks of 30 minutes between each bout, save the final fight in which there is a break until the moon has risen over the coliseum and the fight can begin.

The final fighter wins the Title Belt.

Bets are incredibly prevalent in this day of fighting. The most important bet rounds being Round 3, 12, 15, and 16.

Title Belt

The which they have ownership for for up to six months. After six months, they can be openly challenged via magical message. If the message is received (and touched by the champion), they must fight the challenger within two weeks[2] or the belt is forfeited.

Notes

  1. In the case of Coliseum XXXI, fights lasted 4 days due to the influx of goliath fighters who found there way down from the mountains. All lost in the first three rounds of the qualifier and have not been seen at the Birsk Coliseum since.
  2. In the case of Coliseum XXVI champion Gor Vovic who managed to receive a challenge at sea, an exemption of 26 days was added for travel time due to kraken-pirate interference.
