Nothing could be farther from the truth when it comes to this name. After the rending, this area was hit the hardest by the lack of magic. The area lacked a number of other geographical advantages that most other places had. They didn’t benefit from a year-round summer, they had no access to water/a port, they had no major forests from which they could harvest lumber. The area quickly devolved into a series of squabbling city-states who fought and backstabbed each other for control of the land and resources they did have available.

It also quickly became apparent to the more monstrous races that they could move to this area and be largely undisturbed. When the nation of Tha’velen first found its feet, it expanded its borders from the forest quickly. Indeed, several of the lesser lords of the area fell to their grasp before the others decided to call a temporary truce and convene for a meeting. They met at a long abandoned castle. Each brought exactly 20 of their finest warriors (as this was a stipulation) to ensure that no one would try to backstab the other.

At this meeting, they all agreed on a year long peace so they could show a united front and repel the Tha’velen invaders. After the meeting, the leaders returned to their homes and mustered their armies. They marched them to the front line and began their counterattack on the Tha’velenian forces. The fighting was brutal but over quickly. Tha’velen had sent a good chunk of their armed forces away from the front line, assuming that this would be an easy conquest (based on their previous successes). They sued for peace quickly, and negotiated the terms of their surrender.

Most of the land was returned to the United North, but there were a few cities/towns that opted to stay with Tha’velen because of the newfound peace and stability it had brought. From there, the abandoned castle was restored and used as the meeting place whenever any decisions needed to be made. It is staffed by a cast of warriors who dedicated their entire life to the upkeep and defense of the castle (they are neutral in all matters, simply serving as caretakers to the only governmental building of the United North as a whole). But, from that time, the whole United North has only convened at the castle a handful of times. Most of the time, it’s just a ruler or two who meet there to discuss petty and attempt to put an end to petty squabbles.

The united front that was put on to defeat an outside invader quickly crumbled and they different rulers returned to their backstabbing and small conquests of each other.
